Howdy,
Stock might be ok. Sadly many owners have had problems with stock comps. Some at low milage and some after high milage, duh...
As a preventative, Since I am pulling the primary cover off, I am going to replace to replace the compensator.
What did you use?
I've got 200,000 miles on my stock unit and it looks/sounds fine. I think riding habits have to do with early failures. I always start the bike shifted into neutral when cold, give it a proper warm up, and don't do burn-outs and such.
In fact, I'm the opposite of the "you gotta get the HD stuff out of there" crowd. I prefer OEM as much as possible based on my experiences.
On my 07 I went through 2 stock and 1 SE all failed and the last one I installed was a Baker. This was at around 90000 miles and the bike now has about 125000 and someone I know well has it and it still performs well.

KOOL.
One buddy had a bad stock comp at 80K.
Another had a bad stock at 40K
and another had one last over 100K.
I’ve run stock SE and DH, both good but different. Just installed Evolution Industries “racers edge” comp/spring set up. Call Andre for the info, I’m expecting it to be more robust.
Stock lasted to about 50k and squeezed another 10k out of it before I had enough. 08 cvo road king. I replaced it with the screaming eagle unit and it performed perfectly for about 20k and because I can't ever leave good enough alone...I replaced it with the dark horse unit last year. I only have one season on in, about 6k since I'm riding two now, but I do like the instant power the stock comp didn't have. I will say it is a little noisy. I hate noise and usually I'll fix/ replace whatever the noise maker is but for some reason, maybe because I know what the noise is, but it doesn't bother me and I can only hear it at idle after it nice and warm. It has a bit of an open primary sound to it. Some people say theirs are quiet so maybe it's the luck of the draw and how well all the tolerances stack up. Did I mention the instant power?
