Has anyone upgraded 09 Nightster with a gas gauge?
Hi I really need to have a way to gauge my gas mileage. I have transformed my Nightster into a mini touring bike and want to travel more however constantly resetting my trips to calculate miles traveled on each tank of gas is exhausting. I have done some research and saw that there are flush mount gas caps that monitor but there are some folks who say that doesn't work. Harley offers the sportster fuel gauge kit but I would rather the flush mount gauge. Has anyone sucessfully use any flush mount cap that works well? 09 Nightster Original tank
@09hdr4life I have moved this thread from the Welcome section to the Sportster Models section as you will get better responses to your question in this section.
The Welcome section is more for introducing yourself & letting other forum members know what Harley Davidson you own, not asking technical questions.
IMHO, the HD guage/sender is somewhat "close", but not all that accurate.
What I do (even though I have the "sender") is to track mileage and
stop for a fillup ~110-120 miles (depending on my aggressive wrist)
just so that I do not run out (and yes I do carry a fuel rated MSR canister
behind my "swingarm bag")...
Perhaps not what you wanted to hear, but it'll save you from being
stranded or having to walk....
Don't the later bikes have a dual trip meter? Use one for fuel gauge, the other for total trip mileage? I have not found using the tripmeter to be any hassle at all in almost 36 years. Certainly not exhausting.

The button to cycle through the digital window on the speedo is on its base and yes the bike does have two trip counters. My partner doesn't find it all that easy to reach while riding.

As mentioned by @Andy from Sandy , I have that speedo/tach combo on my '11 Custom. With the fuel sender unit, you get a functioning gas gauge and range to empty. It also has a gear indicator to boot. On the long trips, I use the range to empty more than the gas gauge.
Since it's touring you're after have you looked into the Beeline. I've been using one of the last 4000 miles or so and love it. Uses GPS and provides distance, speed, ride time, clock, also has turn by turn directions and maps your whole journey. Works by linking to your phone. I don't have any guages at all and this is all I use.
