Default 2022 FLTRK Fuel Gauge

This morning in a rush I pull into the gas station to fill up, I have a 1/4 tank. Top off and go, I do not turn off the motorcycle.

Fuel gauge does not move for at least 10 miles, including the electronic miles to empty on the dash. At about 15 miles it goes to 3/4, but not to full as is should. I had a similar occurrence last year again when not shutting the bike off to fill up.

Anyone know if this is a deliberate feature from MoCo to "encourage" us to turn bike off at fill up? I mean a float is a float, when it goes up the gauge should reflect that. Is there a way to reset it on the fly?

Please do NOT respond with the merits of turning off the bike for a fill up, not the question.

IDK the "why", but I had a Ford Sportrac that did the same thing

I've always shut down the bike but I've noticed that sometimes (every time ?) when I start the bike the needle doesn't show full but slowly creeps there.

So when you turn it off it works? If so turn it off.

Yes, it works as expected if you shut the bike off. But we are talking about a simple float mechanism. If the gauge can go down while riding as you consume fuel, why would it not go up when filling the tank?

PS my trucks will immediately show the fuel level increase when filling them up running.

Just speculating here - it might average the readings from the float sensor over time to accommodate fuel sloshing in the tank.

When you turn on the ignition switch, do your speedometer and tachometer needles sweep to their full ranges? If so, this self-test is probably when the fuel gauge and other systems send information back to the BCM and ECM. When the bike is running when adding fuel, there is no self-test, which is probably why your fuel gauge is inaccurate. This is just a wild guess, so take it for what it’s worth.

FWIW - Two of my Ski Doo snowmobiles do this exact thing. But I fill them with the sleds off. but it does take a few minutes of running to show it full.

AI response:

Yes, this is an intentional software parameter by the Motor Company (MoCo). It is not a mechanical failure of your float, but rather a deliberate logic built into the ECM (Engine Control Module). [
, 2, 3, 4]
Why MoCo Programmed It This Way
  • Damping and Anti-Slosh Logic: If the fuel gauge responded immediately to the float on the fly, your fuel needle and "miles to empty" counter would wildly bounce up and down every time you accelerated, braked, or leaned into a turn. [1]
  • The Software Rule: To prevent this sloshing issue, the ECM locks the fuel level reading while the engine is running or the ignition is left on. The software heavily dampens the signal, allowing the gauge to change only at a very slow, pre-programmed rate over several miles of steady riding. [
    , 2]
  • The Trigger: The ECM requires a complete Ignition Power Cycle (ON-OFF-ON) to register that a refueling event occurred and instantly recalculate the new fuel capacity. [
    , 2]
Because you left the engine running, your bike assumed it was still actively riding and consuming fuel from a 1/4 tank, resulting in the 15-mile delay to slowly creep upward. Furthermore, topping off past the automatic pump click can occasionally over-saturate or trick the tank's pressure metrics, further delaying the sensor's calibration. [1]
How to Reset It "On the Fly"
If you accidentally fill up with the bike running, you do not have to wait 15 miles for it to catch up. You can force the ECM to reset immediately by pulling over safely and performing a power cycle:
  1. Pull Over Safely: Find a safe spot to completely stop the motorcycle.
  2. Kill the Engine: Turn the handlebar Run/Stop switch to OFF.
  3. Cycle the Master Ignition Switch: Flip your main ignition switch completely OFF, wait 5 to 10 seconds for the electronics and instrument cluster to go completely dark, and then turn it back ON.
  4. Let the Gauges Sweep: Allow the system to completely boot up and let the fuel pump finish priming before you crank the starter. [1,
    , 3]
This forces a hard reboot of the instrument bus, forcing the ECM to immediately poll the physical position of the float and instantly update both your physical fuel needle and electronic miles to empty. [

Interesting watch, working as designed. If I am in a situation where the fuel gauge reading is critical to me, I will shut the bike off. Thanks for the information.
