Primary/Transmission/Driveline/ClutchFind answers to general powertrain, primary and transmission. Have clutch issues and need suggestions? Post them here.
I have this tick tick tick coming from primary..at least is sounds like that. Any ide what it could be? Man o war sprocket, stock tensioner, bel ray peimary fluid..
Two ear mechanic's stethoscope it to make sure thats were it's coming from.
Where you careful in checking alignment of the sprockets? Reference them off the finished face of the inner primary.
There is only about 0.030 side play on a OEM stock chain and sprockets.
I had a alternator spline strip, slipping, it wore a face groove allowing sprocket to nip chain links. Mine was just bad enough, that it only was doing it in slow 180 turns.
Think mine was a faster tic. Yours sounds like it's under the valve cover.

I used "screwdriver stetoscope" and couldn't determine where it is comming from... the sound wasn't there after I instaled man o war, it came later. The sprockets are within tolerances and the chain is tight enough. I think tighter would be to tight. Could be the famous rocker shaft tick?

Sounds just like mine. I was running it looking for leaks after my oil change the other day and I think it's in the front top mount. Grab a knee and let it idle. Not sure what in that assembly it is but that is identical to mine and where it seems to be coming from. Each time the front cylinder tips forward, it is in time with that tick.
Fyi...I am going to do exhaust gaskets just to see if it is the top mount or that.
Edit- I have been trying to identify the tick for a while so it isn't new and hasn't grenaded yet

I don't know what you mean with front top mount, mine is a softail so no mounts on front top...
