Default auto primary chain tensioner

Well here we go again. I had a whining noise on decel with my old 15 Twin Cam. When checking the primary chain found that it was tighter than a banjo string. Baker attitude adjuster took care of the problem and off I went. Fast forward to my 20 Road glide. Did the research and was told the "new and improved " tensioner was bulletproof. Ha!. Noticed the same whine a while ago and low and behold Banjo tight chain. So I already have the Baker and tore it down today. I had been reading on youtube that you could avoid removing the compensator if you disassembled the Baker and slipped the parts in separately. I have to call bull on that one. I found it impossible. So the big question is "replace compensating nut" or "re-use old one". On my 15 I re-used with no problems but may have just lucked out. Dealer is 70 miles round trip so I am tempted to press my luck. Opinions?

I've reused my Comp bolts like 4-5 times then break down and buy a new one because I feel like I got away with it long enough and don't want to push it, ya know? I've heard/read several times that one of the big reasons the MoCo says to use a new one, (and this pertains to a lot of their "New" bolt suggestions), is because the new ones come with the loc-tite patch already on the bolt. So......... I clean the dog crap out of the threads in the crank shaft with my homemade tool below and Brakleen, then clean the old bolt also, then add my Red Loc-Tite and torque as spec'd. Like I said, I've gotten quite a few re-uses out of each bolt that way with NOOOO issues. That said........ clean everything good and press your luck! If you want to borrow that thread cleaning bolt, come on by bud......

Hey Motojockey, good to hear from you. Cool trick with the old bolt. Looks like you sliced it just enough to loosen the old crud. You are Oakhurst right? I moved down to YLP. I would love to use that. Would be good to meet you.

Just bought a comp bolt at the dealer, $10.61 with tax.
Although my dealer is only 1.5 miles away.
I've re-used the it ONCE, but in the mean time another dealer had it open and I THINK they installed a new one, I'm not taking any chances.

I wouldnt worry about re using the factory bolt, but I would be looking at replacing the comp ramp since I was in there to avoid any potential future problems with those brittle M8 comps.
