I checked out Khromeworks and the 1" bars are too narrow for my liking...

In addition to the Xmission gasket I am going to need to get new gaskets for the front brake system as well. Or at the very least have them on hand.

You will need a new transmission cover gasket.

Perryross has the HD Mini Ape kit and the bars are not 12". The overall rise between bars and risers is 12". That kit might be shorter than you expect.
I PM'ed Perryross and got the 411 from him on the H-D Mini Apes; I am thinking I am going to go this route. In looking also at the pictures he has up, the H-D product is about what I am looking for in terms of looks and price form my Slim. I will be making my orders for the parts here in the next day or two.

When I get everything ready, I will be doing a photo-journal of my work on getting this done. Should be very interesting and fun.

My next bike (Road King I am thinking), however, will be the full deal I am thinking...14" apes with risers, fishtails, etc...

More to follow.

Well, I am in...parts ordered this morning!

Going with the H-D 12" Fat Mini APes, Drag Specialties Cables and brake line (thanks for the info, Perryross!). Cable extender kit will be here Friday.

I have downloaded the install instructions from the MoCo and have started making notes as well as tagging the proper areas in my service manual. I have also joined "Fix My Hog"..couldn't pass it up, they were offering 80% off their membership so it ended up running me $10...best money I ever spent on an online education! Started hitting their "Handlebars 101" series (My best friend/brother is looking at going with apes on his Road King and is telling me if things go well on my bars he will have me do his).

So with those 2 things helping me prep on doing the work myself, plus a trip to Harbor Freight to get a brake bleeder and retaining ring pliers, and a little bit of methodical patience, I should be good to go.

So once things get here and I get to work, I will photo journal the process in it's own thread.

Good luck with the install! A Slim with apes is a beautiful thing.

Thanks man! Everything will be here by next Friday, so looks like next weekend is the big project day. Got all the gaskets and tools that I didn't already have aquired and ready. This weekend will be spent getting the garage cleaned up and organized. A buddy of mine is going to let me use a couple of his tables as so to lay out all of the parts assemblies. I have already gone through the "Fix My Hog" handlebars videos once already...need to go thru Em one more time as a refresher and I should have a decent grasp on things.

As I said, I will photo document as I go, updating on a thread here as I take breaks at each juncture...should be fun.

I was able to cut down an Allen wrench and remove the two lower transmission cover bolts without removing the exhaust, not sure of that is an issue on your bike or not. I was also able to reuse my tranny gasket saving a few bucks.

Not sure if I will be able to do that, plus I will miss out on the torque spec when I remount the cover...I am kind of a stickler on torque spec.

I am going to do the clutch cable change at the cover last I am thinking, since I have to loosen (at the very least) or remove (at the most) the exhaust. Then again, I do want to insure that the cable fits/routs correctly.

Sigh...the internal debate continues...what do you all think? Do it last or remove everything, mount the bars, remount everything then adjust clutch last?

I personally would remove everything that needs to be removed first. That is just me.

Also, you should be able to re-use the transmission oil if you catch all of it. Just something to think about.

I'll tell you my theory as to why I recommended what I did when I did my ape install, and you do what you like.

I personally did not want to remove the exhaust. I my experience, after the years of heat cycles, my experience is that the studs stand a decent chance of breaking. Then, invariably, when I break an easy out in the broken stud, I'll be removing the head and taking it to a machine shop to have it removed on a mill and re-tapped.

Perhaps your luck will be better than mine. :-)
