You had to order directly?
Does that mean you did it without a dealer?
Why was that necessary?
Was it a very unique or old part?

I think they all have to go thru a dealer. Even the indy goes to a dealer.

Just picked up a new toggle switch I ordered for my running lights. Four days and they shipped it to my local dealer, free shipping that way.
Have ordered other parts as well as gear with no problem. Give 'em a call and tell them you're pissed.

3 and 1/2 weeks is not a lot of time but i believe there might be some confusion.
It really depends on when order was placed and if item is available
The factory would rarely deal directly with a purchaser (indy or other).
Meaning your indy either has a relationship with a local dealer and they will order for him or your indy orders online (like many folks) from a Harley dealer that deals online.
Even the J & P cycle book has a disclaimer in regards to genuine HD parts be acquired through a dealer.
There are several internet dealers that offer discounts over retail pricing along with other incentives such as shipping.
Very few items are "stock" items in a dealer making many a special order.
Additionally some dealers will do a national check to see if it is sitting on someones shelf.
For example go to this link and look for your part..you can see retail price and selling price. http://www.shopronniesharleydavidson...partfinder.htm

Call a dealer, any dealer, and ask for the part's price and availability. They can see if it's back-ordered, and if so, there's usually a release date (which often gets pushed back). If they can't look up the part's availability, they don't know what they're doing. Call a different dealer. They all use the same Mother Harley info, but some Parts Counter people don't know how to navigate inside the system.
If it's not on back-order, someone screwed the pooch. You should have a part within "7 to 10 business days". Either your Indy didn't place the order in a timely fashion, the dealer sat on it a few days (waiting for their regular order day), or both.
