I don't think it really matters, the clutch should operate exactly the same regardless of what gear the transmission happens to be in...?

I don't think it really matters either but, WARNING: don't pull the clutch lever while you have things loose or you'll be going into the tranny to reset the actuator *****.

The ***** under the cam plate are retained by a retainer ring. They will not come out (unless something is broken) One of the biggest mistake on a first clutch adjustment is not screwing the screw all the way in past no clearance to deburr it and also pulling the clutch lever in and out slightly as you find the zero clearance to start you back off. That also insures the ***** are in the slots. Do not totaly free up cable also. If you free up cable so much that you cannot fill clutch, you have it way too loose for adjusting. Search Youtube. Do it cold. Check both locks of the bars to finally set your cable free play to the minimum at the tightest point. Once set correctly, a oil wet clutch will go a long long time with no maintenance. There is little wear in the small slip pulling out and and gear changes and once it locks up, no wear. I could not measure the wear at 40K with a micrometer it was so small. Less than .0005

D-Boy,

You should invest in a Harley service manual. Best money you'll ever spend on your bike.
