Distraction yes, but over time and training it becomes an asset, you are not taking your eyes off the road like in the video posted by 1004ron when the guy hits the back of the UPS truck, as you can see in the video he took his eyes off the road to look down at maybe his speedo and when he looks back up there is the UPS truck, SMACK. We use the HUD displays all the time when flying, both in the military and commercially with no issues.
