I thought about doing it myself, I am fairly competent but the ABS bleeding scares me a little too.
I helped a friend with a set of apes last summer. We did a reverse bleed on the ABS and had no problems. You need to make sure that you reverse bleed the brakes before you hook up the battery and turn on the ignition switch.
We used a large basting syringe and plastic tubing and pushed brake fluid from the caliper to the master cylinder. Just make sure that you don't over flow the reservoir.
When I did my bars that was not an option since the upper brake line had been off for such a long time. I took it to the dealer and they charged me 1/2 hour labor to bleed and reset the ABS.

i love the apes also. Really opens up my stance on the bike. I have 12" wild one cubbys. My hands use to fall asleep on long run but now i do a few pushups every morning and the sleep hands never happen anymore lol not sure if the pushups help or not but there it is.
I went with 4" risers cause I googled ape pics till my eyes bled and I still couldn't make up my mind what would look good on my Lo! I am happy with just the riser lift for now.

Here is my bike with 16" Apes, They are on 2 1/2" rise. I find them very comfortable. Best of luck on your search.. BTW, I have been through three sets of bar's before I found ones I really liked. Do your self a favor, try different ones and see how they feel. Save your money and do the job only once.
How hard is it to do yourself. I know they have kits for the wiring brake an clutch cables but it is still intimidating to me.
Hill Country offers a great set up and good prices, I ordered mine from them several years ago and they offer the kit as a plug and play pre-wired set up or if I remember right you can cut and solder, I chose the plug and play set up and was simple to put on and the brake lines and clutch cable weren't bad at all but I do not have ABS or any of that fancy stuff

Thanks. I will look into that. I don't have ABS either. Is there no need to bleed regular breaks?
