Hello All,
I am new to this group and new to motorcycle ridding. I am looking to make a purchase of a new 2007 Harley soon. I am stuck between two models; the Springer Classic and the Fat Boy.
My concerns with the Springerare that I hear it can be tricky to ride with the spring front end and that maintenance cost are higher than the rest of theSoftail line.
I am new to motorcycle riding, so new that I don't yet have a motorcycle endorsement, but I have scheduled myself for the motorcycle safety course at the end of this month.
A little about myself. I am 34yrs old, 6'1" &230 lbs. I would be riding the bike around town and back and forth to work (60 mile round trip).
I always stare at the Screaming Eagle Springer.... Love it.....
Maintenance is more yes but usually with a new bike if u dont wrench it yourself you should finance in a PPM deal with the dealer (PPM=Prepaid Maintenance) so its only a few dollars more per month payment, instead of 400.00 or so each time u bring it in.. hah PPMs usually last 3 years.
but
I bought a Fatboy and love it...but I still look at the Springer Every time I go in
one more thing PPM is usually tied to the dealer you buy it at... if you are more than 100miles away, you pay out of pocket for the Service and they will pay you according to their own price of maintenance, so if its more at the shop u bring it too..then you out that money... heh
Since you dont have an endorsement.. but going to take the MSC is a good idea!!
It's a Harley. That means that all practical decisions either go out the window now or will later on. I say forget about maintenance costs and get the one you REALLY want. Obviously try to ride the same models to see how they handle too...I am biased and am voting for the fatboy.
I but 32K, in six years, on my fatboy; loved every mile. Wished I'd bought the Springer the after the second year and by the sixth year I had to have the Street Glide, go figure. In 2000 HD re-engineered the springer geometry so the trickiness is all but gone, as I recall the springer front-end doesn't dive under hard braking. When your ready ride one of each. It is a tough choice as they may be the two most iconic styles of the whole breed. Romor has it there will be no 08 Springer Classic.
Ive had two Springers a 93 FX and now I have a 05 Classic both great bikes and no problems. What you have to do is go with the one you like the best there is nothing wrong with ether, but if you are interested in the Springer apparently 2007 is the last year for them
