I am using the monotube cartridge kit and find them softer than stock.

I put new progressive spring kit in the front of my rocker and it made a HUGE positive difference!!!!!! Only cost 90 bucks and an hour to install. I used SE heavy duty fork oil.
GREAT upgrade, wish I had done it sooner. Way better ride and handling.

Easiest and best upgrade I found, and still on the lower cost side, is Race Tech single rate springs plus Ricor dampers. See sticky at top of the softail section. Although it's for FXSB, the upgrade is applicable to any HD with 41mm or 49mm forks (AFAIK).

Progressive springs up front won't cut it as well as single rate springs plus better damping. You already have progressive springs up front in the bike from the factory, and as you've noticed they don't ride all that great.

The monotube drop ins from what I hear are good when they work. some like them some don't. IMO the only good monotube cartridges are from Ohlins but they are pricey.

Anyway- call Brian at Ricor. phone number is in my sticky. he is a really sharp guy and will tell you the best combo weight of front spring and damper.

I have a big dog chopper with inverted Mean Street forks, and it came with Race Tech springs in it with 1.0kg single rates. rides amazing too.

There really is no need to put Ohlins or Race Tech components in a Harley because at the end of the day it will always be a Harley no matter how hard one tries to turn it into something else.

You're right- Why would anyone want to make their HD ride better, turn and stop better? That's crazy talk, I tell ya- The factory front and rear suspension on all HD bikes is fine, for everyone, all the time.

Kidding aside- Ohlins, overkill yes. Race Tech springs plus Ricor dampers, not expensive and a major improvement. Look into it a bit.

I am very happy with the Monotubes on the front - the gas filled hydraulic shock absorber is what makes it so superior to stock.
