Default if it werent for bad luck

sat morning I got my new front tire mounted and new brake pads installed. working by myself this may have taken 30-45mins total and I was pretty darn happy with myself. so I decide to take it out for a quick ride to make sure everything felt right before taking the wifey for a ride. everything felt normal and I was headed back, turned on to my street hit third gear and pow! the freaking belt broke! anyway, ive got about 4miles on my brand new tire and from what I can gather a pretty major expense coming up in order to fix this dang belt.

You're not kidding.
I had one replaced on a Dyna a couple of years ago under warranty.
Service tech told me it was a $1000 job if I had to pay for it.
Of course that's the dealer's price...

to be perfectly honest I bought the bike used from the local dealer. ive put about 10k on it and I never checked the belts tension. the break is a clean break, straight across between two teeth. the local indy just quoted me 660.00 for replacement.

Now is the time to think about changing the front pulley while you are in there.

If you can do the front wheel and pads you can do belt for 150 or less. just a few more bolts!

I am seriously thinking about it. I have always done my own maintenance on my bikes and trucks. this is something that I have never attempted or had the need to. but for 660+tx I may have to give her a go.

Super easy to do, pull the whole primary (inner and outer), swinger pivot and rear wheel...

While you're at it, see if you can figure out why the belt failed in the first place. Are there any burrs on the rear sprocket, suggesting that a stone went between the belt and the pulley at some point? Do you still have the stock belt guards in place?
