I bought a 2010 96B engine and 6 speed transmission at an auction. I've got enough softail parts to build a motorcycle but no frame. The OEM softail frames with title, I have come across have all been very expensive. Don't really want a salvage frame but may have to settle for one. I checked into aftermarket and custom frames like Kraft Tech. They said they could not build a frame for a post 2006 twin cam due to patent concerns. Why wont a 96B engine fit in an 88B frame? Has anyone been there and done that? Thanks. cwbarg
96 2008 softail engine swap to 88 2005 Softail frame
I have a customer who is purchasing my whole 2008 Softail drivetrain (96 CI) and wire harness and we are going to attempt to install it into a 2005 (88 CI) softail frame. I have measured everything and so far it looks like I will have to shorten the swing arm pivot axle shims. I will let you know everything else I have to do to complete the swap.
I still have everything from the 2008 softail so hopefully the swap will go pretty smoothly.
Photo of the 2008 softail used for the swap is attached below.

Reason: added photo
I got the 2005 softail rolling chassis delivered to me yesterday. I installed the 2008 (96 CI) engine and transmission into the frame. The 2005 swing arm bolt and engine bolts are the correct size and slid through the mounting tabs and through the engine and trans with no issues. I had to use the 2008 transmission mounting tab located at the bottom of the transmission. One of the shims between the transmission and the swing arm need to be machined down while the other one is too short/small so I am having a machine shop build me a new one. The shims between the engine and the frame also need to be machined down so they will fit. I will measure the shim sizes, and as soon as they are built and work I will give you the measurements I you are still interested in doing the swap

I appreciate your help. I lucked out this weekend. I just bought a 2010 softail heritage parts bike with a good frame, swing arm and clear title. I bolted the engine into the frame already or I should say I bolted the frame onto the engine and transmission as it was easier that way. And yes I would like to have the dimensions. I or someone else will probably end up doing a swap like what started this thread. Thanks. Guys like you are what make these forums work. Thanks again.
I forgot the measurements of the spacers at the shop. I will update you with them tomorrow.
I did end up using the 2008 wire harness because the 2005 wire harness was customized and missing a lot of plugs. The 2008 injectors use different plug ins than the 2005 injectors. The 2008 wire harness also uses a different stile of plugs for the voltage regulator, the speedo, and the handle bar plugs for the switches. I have a lot of Harley parts so it was no big deal doing the swap. it just took a lot more work than I expected. I will update this thread tomorrow with the spacer measurements and their location on the bike.
Note:
Make sure you use the throttlebody and ECM from the 96 CI in order for the bike to get the correct fuel ratio. One can also use an after market system such as a thundermax to obtain the same results just make sure the bike is dyno tuned (not just dynode) for the updated changes.

What frame did you use there, OEM?
I've got a chance to pick up a wrecked 08 Rocker-C right now for $1500 with low miles and a wasted frame. Kraft Tech's TC-B frames say they fit 2000-Up "B" motors so I'm thinking about picking it up and throwing it together.
