I just recently put grease in the neck. Did some local riding and all was well, today i did a little over 200 miles and saw this grease. Is this normal so soon after filling?
Yep....when I put new grease in, I pump it in until I see it oozing out. It might ooze out for the first few rides, especially in hot weather. Normal, so don't worry.
grease all over the bike after a ride is not normal sounds messy to me the idea of filling up the whole steering head with grease is the issue what I meen by that is the only parts that need lubrication are the moving parts rollers- ***** and races any more than that and you will have a mess think about it a wheel bearing will travel more distance in a day then steering head bearings will travel in a life time in 20+ years as a mechanic the most wear or pitting I have ever seen is on touring bikes from traveling in a strait line for long distances you will have pitting of the races at 12 and 6 o-clock only time I have seen them dry or rusty I am sure that water was the cause power washer if you over water a plant it can will or die
Well Chucks, you are correct about the bearing being the only part to need grease, but being a mechanic, I figure you'd be able to look and see the great fitting and realize that the only way to get grease in the bearing is to pump that whole cavity full until it reaches its destination. Design flaw.
Too much grease is not bad first off. The way I've to lead to believe is you pump grease in till is oozes from both the bottom and top. After I have it oozing from the bottom I find it still takes a bit more to see it ooze from the top.
It's good to see that your doing more than just fluids. But like you I hate the grease getting on everything up front when I ride. You see I have a garage queen that I ride. In other words, I keep her showroom clean though I ride her often.
I say keep the grease flowing and grease often, you'd be surprised how long your bearings will last if you keep them lubed.
