I just installed the Kuryakyn Mach 2 horn cover on my bike. When I torque down the nut that holds the cover on the horn sounds like a wounded moose! Loosen that nut a few turns and it sounds normal. I have tried spacers and even made a cardboard "gasket" for the rear of the cover where it meets metal. No improvement. The connections are tight, horn is not hitting the cover and no wires touching anywhere. As soon as I tighten that nut, the horn is muffled. Anyone had this issue or have any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
STEP 10 Test the horn. If the horn sounds muffled, recheck the torque on the nut holding the horn to the new bracket and ensure the bell of the horn is not touching the Mach 2 Cover. If this does not improve the sound of the horn, it may indicate that the horn is damaged and may need to be replaced.
Obviously Kuryakyn is aware of this. This indicates that it is normal and occurs due to:
1. Tightening the nut too much
2. The horn touching the cover
3. Defective horn
Yes I read that. The horn is fine as it works perfectly unless the bolt is tightened (as stated). With the bolt loosened to where the horn works properly it is pretty much swinging free so not an over tightening issue. I'll call Kuryakyn but wanted to see if any members may have had this issue. Anyone had any real world experience with this issue?
Harley horn are a POS imho. I finally put a 2 bugle air horn on mine. I was tired of it working when it wanted too and I got tired of young kids pulling out in front of me when they are on the phone or texting. My air horn sounds like a train!
Talked with Kuryakyn today. What they said is that some Harley horns are a little bit bigger than others and I must have one. They have no idea why this is. Said maybe 1 in 1000 horns. Said I could send it back but I do like the cover. Guess I'll try my luck with another horn. Sucks though!
So I got a new horn at the dealer. Got the new louder version. Told the parts guy what Kuryakyn said about some being larger..he asked what they were smoking. Anyway....the new horn is better. Not perfect for sure but sounds like a larger wounded moose at least. Frustrating but I guess I'll live with it since I do really like the cover. Gotta say my opinion of Kuryakyn parts has gone down though.
