Default Air Cleaner Recommendations

I have been getting my bike tuned (I have a 1995 Harley Fatboy with a 124ci S&S Motor). We played around with the jets and it still bogs down and stutters when you hit 125km/h or when you crank the throttle. I finally figured out that it is the air cleaner creating the problem as my ride without it was perfect! So I am looking for recomendations for an air cleaner that may solve the problem?

Are you running a carb big enough to supply the engine with enough air? Usually abog or stutter is caused by too much fuel too fast on the accelerator pump, causing the engine to flood a bit. But I'm no genius when it comes to Harleys and carbs.

I am currently running a Mikuni carb. I believe it is big enough to handle the power as it runs awesome when no air filter is on the bike.

Go down to your local v-twin indy, let them dial it in. Ask to watch, it's a piece of cake once you see.

It runs awesome though.... as long as the air filter is off.

All Stage 1 air cleaners perform roughly the same regardless of brand. I've tried many different brands over the years and prefer the Arlen Ness Big Sucker due to it's simple yet effective design. Arlen Ness sells what they call a "Stage 2" air cleaner designed specifically for large cubic inch engines. It has a huge filter element. The filter element is to large to use any conventional cover so a rain sock should be kept near by. Check out the Stage 2 air cleaner on their web site.

In your post you did not mention what size Mikuni you're running.

Its a Mikuni HSR but I am unsure the exact size.

The Mikuni HSR for Harley's comes in three sizes, 42, 45, and 48 mm. I suspect that the 42 would be a bit small for your engine. The 45 with the correct jets might be the better choice. Recommend you investigate what size carb, and jets you're running. Also try to determine your intake manifold size. All useful information when tuning.
