Help!...I stopped for gas yesterday and like a FOOL turned my petcock off...fueled up and started bike going own the road the bike started to lose power...I REMEMBERED the petcock was off reached down tuned it on and continued to ride for about 4 miles when the bike died. Got it home pulled the fuel line from the petcock and didn't get any flow from it in any position. Took the petcock out cleaned and reasembled it (*like an #$%^$ after I reassembled it I blew through it) ...reinstalled the petcock turned it on and had good flow. NOW the bike won't start. I pulled the plugs and get good spark on each. I pulled the air cleaner and get gas to the carb. Could this be a diaphram problem on the vacuum side of the petcock? How do I know if the choke is working right? The bike just sputters and occasionally backfires through the exhaust but WILL NOT START.

Well... just to make sure you don't have water and crap in your carburetor causing you grief you should pull you bowl off or drain the bowl (not sure which carb you have) and clean it out. My vacuum petcock gave me some fits (decided it wanted to turn off during a couple of rides) so I fixed it by removing the vacuum line and installing a high flow petcock. No more problems. I got mine from J&P, but it seems like everyone carries them and they are fairly cheap!

Thanks for the info...I think it's all related to the damn vacuum petcock...I did drain the bowl...still doesn't fire up...are the backfires through the exhaust a sign of fuel starvation?

Yes, it can be caused by fuel starvation, jetting problems and ignition, but since you are already having fuel delivery problems that would be a good place to start. You might IM TCSTD for his thoughts as well... he is our wizard.

Get rid of the vacuum operated petcock. IMNSHO, those things are for people who are too forgetful to ride a bike.
