Default Issues after Big Bore Kit

Hello I am new to the forum area. I have a question, I have a 2005 Night Train (EFI). I just finished installing a 98" Big Bore Kit. Now it wont run. It sounds different when I crank the motor over, then when it does start it will not stay running. The little amount of time that it does run it backfires not only out the exhaust but also through the velocity stack. I currently have Vance & Hines Short Shots on it, I have a K&N Velocity Stack, and now the 98' big bore kit. I have not had it mapped, my question is would the map being incorrect cause my problems? Is my next step a remap???? And can I achieve the correct map with a Power Commander V or do I need to use Harleys race tuner???

Yeah dude. You definitely need to re tune that thing before it will run correctly.

I don't have any experience with the power commander but I don't see why you wouldn't be able to use that to tune it.

Assuming that the installation was done correctly and you are running all the correct parts I bet you as soon as you tune it it will run like a champ.

Sounds like the chain is off a tooth, dots not aligned. Remove cam cover and recheck.

My thoughts exactly. When an engine backfires back through he carb like that it's not a tune issue, you've got something mechanical most of the time in my experience.

That would be my guess also. Make sure the cam dots align and also the dots between the timing sprocket and crank sprocket.

By the way I was able to remove my cam cover without removing my exhaust by using a ball end allen.

Here's my thread on checking my cam tensioners where I discuss how I did it (it's easy):

If I were you I check the engine/cam timing. If it is too far off you could bend a valve or worse.

You have two things working against you right away. Your pipes are a bad power choice and a velocity stack is a horrible thing to tune. No remap! Don't even try to start it without a remap. You are going to burn your motor up!

I didn't have any of the timing components off. I just installed the new cylinders, pistons, and rings. Could my timing still be off??

Did you mix up the spark plug wires?

The Twin Cam has a specific firing order unlike previous Harleys.
