Default What's this piece?

Hey all,

I was changing the engine, gearbox, and primary oil today. I took off the whole primary cover (as my bike doesn't have an easy access cover) to check the chain tension and nylon bit. Well, when I was buttoning it all up, I found this piece on the ground under the bike.

Does anyone recognize it? I'm thinking (hoping) that it's from something else, a tool I used or something, but I can't figure it out.

It's a 2007 Softail, FLSTC, btw

Thanks

Hard to judge size, but it might be a dowel (locating) pin.

Edit: Yep looks like 24754-75A

Sorry about the lack of scale. It's about 1/3" wide, 1/2" tall.

I thought dowel pins were usually solid, so that didn't even cross my mind. A dowel pin for what, do you think, the primary cover?

I pulled up the fiche on Ronnies.

It shows two dowels in the primary cover.

I googled the part number and the images look a lot like yours...

Yes dowel pins are often solid, but also some times split like this one.

Well that's unfortunate... Thank you for the help, though!

I can't imagine that I need the locating pin to actually be installed, since it's already "located", right? Just put it in a baggie and install it next time I change the fluids?

I'm not positive about that and I'm just **** enough that I would pull it back apart to put it in.

But one would think if it isn't leaking it is probably OK.

Yeah you're probably right... It's also a good idea to verify that the other dowel pin is installed and not just floating about inside the primary. Thanks!

Yes it is a dowel pin which is located on the In-Board side of the inner primary. There are 4 of them. 2 large and 2 of smaller size.

That's interesting, if I understand his post, as he didn't take the inner primary off.

Yes, it's odd that this dowel was found after a fluid change. I could only speculate as to why but the dowel in the photo is identical to the 2 large dowels on the top of the inner primary. The purpose of the large dowels is to align the starter.

Attached is a photo of the inboard side of an inner primary from an 08.
