Brake fluid question
So many times you see folks commenting on something that they probably shouldn't or passing along common misconceptions that seem to be facts around here. Don't get me wrong , this is a great place to get information and the wealth of experience and knowledge far out numbers situations like this
I had an old boss that said to me " a smart man is confident in what he doesn't know" I hated that miserable motherf#$*er but it makes me think every time I open my mouth and I always pass that along when I have a new guy start in the shop. I wrench on heavy equipment, and I would rather tell someone that I need to look it up in a manual before I go and pass bad info along that may end up getting someone hurt or killed. I always tell my guys "don't worry about knowing the answer, know where to find it"
This is truly my last comment on this subject.
The comment that I REMOVED was that DOT4 could be mixed with DOT5 but only if in a pinch.
What I should have said was that DOT4 could be mixed with DOT5.1 but only if in a pinch.
I removed the comment due to it contained misinformation.
Within 30 minutes of the OP's original post, Ranger73 corrected my misinformation which was fine and much appreciated by all including myself.
The issue I had was the derogatory way in which the correction was communicated.
Ranger73 stated that their comment was "a bit insulting" so whether that was meant to be an apology or not, I'll take it as such and move on.

Oh well.
Wasn't trying to insult you. was just trying to get the OP's attention. Like I said Before he made a very bad mistake.

click on fitment and go to 2001 bikes...
accordingly to this,, your bike uses dot 5...
my 07 uses Dot 4. and says so right on the master brake covers...
Here is a chart I found about Brake fluids compatibility
taken from . this is a good read

OP, the correct answer is on the COVER of your brake master cylinder - I'd trust that before I'd trust anything written, including the HD manual.
(well, it could be a revised edition....)
Hope this helps,
John
But what if someone totally Flushed out all of the stock fluid and replaced it with something other that what the covers say.. which in this case it says dot 5 is stock.. and it doesn't work or you can't mix with Dot 3 - 4 or 5.1 brake fluid
IMO that another reason that --- unless you know 100% sure what your bike has in it (hard to tell if you got ut used)... then do a total flush and take it back to stock fluid...
