Default ECM Fitment Question

What range of ECM part numbers will work in a 2005 Heritage? After spending all summer chasing down an intermittent problem I've decided it's time to try changing the ECM. I'm sure the base number is 32852 but what year designations will work.

'02 to '06 should work but don't quote me on that.

Does it really need to be HD? Open your mind, quite few after market gurus out there.

Yeah, but a Thundermax or similar is $800. A used HD ECM can be found cheap and marrying it to the TSSM isn't expensive. And I already have a Power Vision that I have a dyno tune for.

My understanding is '04 and '05 are stand alone models. But don't quote me on that either. If you find out for sure, be sure to post up the answer.

Have you tried the Twin Scan II ABS Low Cost Scan Tool ?

Your problem may still exist with the new ECM but at least you will have a new diagnostic tool for other things.

I'm pretty sure the Power Vision diagnostics tell you everything the Twin Scan can. The only code ever was a TPS low/open. Replaced it. Listing everything I've done this summer to eliminate the problem would take a page. The entire fuel system is new except the injectors which have been cleaned and bench tested. New plugs and wires. Battery tested and cables/connections cleaned and tight. Engine wiring harness completely gone through. The ECM is about all that's left.
The problem is a miss/sputtering/dying between 1500 and 3000 RPM at 5 to 30% throttle. Sometimes. Sometimes it runs perfectly.

That sounds like a mapping issue. If you are using the stock ECM without a piggyback tuner, then it could be fixed with a Screamin' Eagle Race Tuner (SERT). It has been discontinued and replaced by something else by the MoCo however, it is still available under a different name - same company that made it for SE has rebranded it.

I have Power Vision. I had it dyno tuned when I had a Power Commander V then converted the map to PV when I upgraded to it. I've also played with the map in the bad range with no luck. Besides, when it runs right it really runs right. When it acts up it's really bab. I can't see the map randomly changing itself. I guess it could happen but that would still point to the ECM with Power Vision.

Sooner,

I went through this same exercise a couple years ago. I live in a country that does not have a Harley Dealer. No problem since I do my own wrenching unless my ECM fails. Years back, Harley sold replacement ECM's pre-mapped. A replacement ECM for my bike is now sold "Blank" and must be flashed by a dealer and according to Harley, while connected to the bike. I found a used ECM, exact year and model, from a motorcycle salvage company advertising on ebay. Purchased it, FedEx'ed it, and it sits on my parts shelf as a spare.

Good Luck
