Hi, complete novice here, but I learnt to ride because of harley davidson...
I'm in the UK and what I've got to spend will only stretch to softails between mid 1990's to 2000. I'm looking for advice on what to look out for in these models as far as known faults go. Any thing I should specifically check when looking at a 1999 fatboy with 20k on the clock? And other questions like that.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I want to be able to take my hard earned money and spend it well... I don't want to start looking at the jap harley look a likes, so would love to hear opinions about the older models and that I'm not barking up the tree as a complete beginer on harley ownership!
I cannot answer with specifics. I'll let others respond. But 20K is just broken in on a properly cared for bike. Harley's are well built and made to last for years. I'm sure you know to look for the usual stuff, brakes, oil leaks, check the frame at the steering head for signs of frame repair (repaint, or cracking paint at the weld point), ect.
I think most people take pride in their Harleys and take care of them. A good way to determine how well they took care of the bike is to look at the other vehicles they have. If the person lets their other vehicles get run into the ground, chances are they did the same with their bike. Polish on the tank and fenders and some shiney chrome can be deceiving sometimes. A few hundred dollars worth of shiney parts can help get a person substantially more money than the bike is really worth. But as I said, most people take pride in their bikes and will take good care of them.
