Sluggish first start
Battery holds very good charge. The way I see it is why does it only do it on the first start up. Like I said earlier, after the first slow start I then start the bike 3-4 times right after the first start and it starts like a charm. No hot start problems either. I am leaning more towards it just been a cold start due to oil thickness. South Texas gets very hot, so I will see if it does the same thing in Aug. when the mornings are 85*.
Yeah, that's pretty much normal, especially on a cold day. My Heritage did the same thing until I upgraded the battery cables to Sumax. Now it doesn't. I did the upgrade due to another issue, but with the new cables it cranks real strong. See the link..

My Breakout did this too until I changed the start area timing to 0 degrees in the spark adv tables. Check your spark advance tables F/R in the 100 kpa, 750 rpm row. set the 90 and 100 kpa, 750 rpm row cells to 0.00 both front and rear tables. It will not hurt anything to try it.
reason is if your engine is cold and oil thick, you go to crank it and spark is occurring as the piston comes up. by setting it to 0 degrees there is no spark until TDC and nothing pushing back on the piston.
I had to do this on my crazy build 107" Evo as well- even with manual compression releases it would be a hard starter until I put my cranking spark advance (500rpm or under) at 0.
I've seen some guys run negative timing (-1.00, -2.00) at cranking so the spark occurs on downstroke, which will help push the piston.
anyway just something else to consider if you have a tuning device.

My Fatboy Lo 2013 does the same tough start. it drives me nuts. I do have it on the battery tender but if it doesn't catch on the first or second crank, I'm doomed and I drain the battery.
Now that was last November.
I have started it here in Minnesota in March, same hard crank and deep draw on the battery but it did start. It's been warm here this winter so I've been able to ride weekends in March.
What gives me a bit of pause is when I road trip, what happens if it doesn't popover in the middle of Iowa.
I might just buy a new Big Crank.
