I find it therapeutic to do maintenance on my bike. In the early days of spring, late days of winter, i may go out and check it just to do it. It's not expensive and gives me the opportunity to tinker around. Not hurting anything, not helping anything.
Some think that 5000 miles is overkill. I'm the opposite. Three quarts of motor oil is pretty cheap, and heat is a killer of oil. Air cooled motor run hot. Much hotter than liquid cooled. And since air cooled motors depend on oil as a coolant as well as lubrication, I prefer to keep it fresh. So, i'll change it about every 3k. Filter every other change.
don't trust the dealer. they say they service their trade ins but that is bs. remember they are trying to turn a profit on it so the less they have to spend on making the bike sellable the better. the only thing i've seen them do is change tires because by law they can't sell a bike with tires below the legal tread wear.
with that in mind every time i buy a used bike the first thing i do is change fluids since i dont know when was the last time the previous owner did it unless service receipts are provided. then i go on 3k intervals on the engine and 6k on the trans/primary. i do syn too so it might be overkill but at least it makes me feel good lol

Agree about the dealers BSing about this. Me I follow the service manual recommendations on service intervals. I use conventional HD motor oil and HD Formula+ trans and primary.
