How hard is it to replace the compansator and front bearing?

What are you calling a front bearing?

Nothing to a compensator R&R.

There is a bearing behind the stator that fits on the shaft. I would be replacing the bearing as well while it is torn down.

Replacing the compensator is a piece of cake. The bearing that you are talking bout is only replaceable with the cases split.

Have a look at number 13/17. That's a crank bearing; apart from that there is no bearing behind the compensator, rotor or stator.

The cases have to be separated to R&R it. What led you to believe it needs to be replaced? If you're referring to number 14, that's a spacer.

I misspoke, I was thinking of the bearing on the transmission shaft.

Default compensator update

Turns out the problem in the primary was not a bad compensator. I bought the bike used a number of years ago and am still learning what modifications have been done. Apparently, the prior owner put a HD automatic chain tensioner in for the primary chain. When my indy pulled the cover we found that there was no slack in the primary chain and this was causing the hard shifting and loud clunks when shifting. Luckily the inspection of the spline on transmission shaft and clutch are ok and the bearing on the shaft turns smoothly. Will still need to inspect the bearing. From what I have been told this is a common problem with the HD Chain tensioner. My take away is if you have a HD auto chain tensioner take it off, if you're thinking about buying one, don't.
