on my way to work earlier this week, riding my 2010 fatboy I hit a deer doing about 55, I still haven't seen the bike in daylight, so I don't really know how bad the damage is yet, but I do know the front fender, headlight, one turn signal, and gas tank are all trashed. there's not really a whole lot to a bike, and I can't imagine it taking much to total one. do you guys think it will be totaled with that kind of damage? I'm gonna pick the bike up from the tow lot later today, I'll post pictures asap.
Hitting a deer at 55 and being able to talk about it is awesome. Glad your not in a hospital or worse. I bet you are sore none the less. Lets see some pics of the bike if you can post them. I have been told that if the steering stops are broke off the frame, it can be totaled. I guess your insurance will have to let you know after they inspect it. Did the deer die as well?
Take care and get checked out if you are hurting if you haven't been checked already by a doctor or the ER.
Phil

it was a little deer, but it doesn't take much... I'm pretty sore, but fared pretty good, bunch of stitches above my left eye, a new flat spot on my chin, and some misc. roadrash. the deer... it's deader than dead. I was covered in deer... well... stuff... when I got to the hospital.

it is, but I was just curious about other people's experiences.

Reason: edited for spelling...
Glad to hear you are okay, other than that minor case of road rash.
If they do total it out you may want to ask them how much to buy it back. Usually, they will sell the totaled vehicles for a song - not being in the salvage business and just wanting to get rid of them.
Even if the front is messed up bad, the back 2/3's should still be in good shape. Would make for a good start towards a winter project, or a good source of spare parts.
Did you at least get the backstraps from the deer? Nothing better than fresh road-kill...
I just went through this with my '03 Heritage. A car hit me and I was worried about it being totaled. I wanted to keep the bike...
From some research and a friend in the insurance industry, I learned they will total it for two reasons....
One...if the cost of repairs is higher than their predetermined percentage of vehicle value. I have heard anywhere from 65% to 80% of the bikes value. They pick their percentage knowing that most damaged vehicles will have damage that is not revealed until it is disassembled for repairs. If they give the go-ahead to fix a vehicle, they are obligated to fix it.... even if unseen damage pops up and costs over the vehicle value.
Two... if there is frame damage, it will be totaled or the frame will be replaced ($4K repair). There is a debate about what is frame damage, where the engine guard is concerned. On my softail, the top mounting tab was bent, and it wasn't considered frame damage. On an '09+ touring bike, the top mounting tab is a frame support plate. If that is torn or bent, it will be considered frame damage.
Your bike should be valued around the 12K mark.... giving you at least a 6-7K repair (minus any frame damage), and your bike should be fixed.
My '03 Heritage had a repair estimate of $4100 and they fixed it without question. In fact, because I owned it outright and told them I would fix some of it myself, they just took my repair estimate from a Harley dealer and wrote me a check for that amount.....
FYI.... repairs add up quickly. Mine was a slow speed crash, and the engine guard/saddle bag saved all tins... No paint work needed. I had; left front fork bent, bent handlebars, bent engine guard with one floorboard mount and the top mounting tab bent, dented triple tree cover, badly scraped clutch lever, and scuffed left saddlebag.... this was a $4100 repair bill.
I hope some of this info helps...
Glad you are unhurt and good luck with the repair!

I hit one 2 years ago and walked away. Although it felt like he ripped my leg off I walked away from it and didn't care about the bike. You are blessed, lucky or both.
