fairly new to me (3 months) 2000 heritage. 95 ci with gear drive cams, mikuni carb. runs like a scalded ape when you lean on it. but........it has "ping" all over the place. no, not lugging it ping, but roll on ping. I tried choke on, to see if I was lean, no change. I tried octane boost, no change. always run premium gas, 91 or better octane. anything under 2000 rpms I have a surge. idle is normal. I know the crank sensor is un adjustable, so could I be advanced too far somehow?? plugs are new and the old ones looked pretty much even in color, looked normal. bike sat for awhile, but ive run a couple tanks of carb cleaner thru it too, no change.
help??

Not 100% sure what you're saying...if it is that under 2000 RPM you are getting a ping...that is lugging.
You could have carbon deposits that are causing the ping, or as simple as being to far advanced on the timing.
under 2000 rpm I have a surge. say, second gear going down our block at 25 mph....surges.
any roll on I get ping. I can be doing 3000 rpm and roll on the throttle, in any gear, and I get ping. at 65 mph, in 5th, I can roll on, and get ping. I know lugging, im not lugging this motor.
it does sound too advanced to me, I agree, but there is no adjustment right?

Once you are sure you have good AFR, then I would check to see if you have carbon build up causing the detonation. If not, you can adjust the timing with an aftermarket module. You probably already have one from when the engine was built to a 95. Crane and DTT both make programmable ignitions for your bike.
I have an '06 with the same 5 speed trans you do, it'll cruise all day at 65 in 5th. But if you gas it at that speed it is definitely lugging the motor. I downshift and it's fine, downshift twice and it scoots on down the road. Seems strange that you would have a different experience. All 5 speeds have a 1:1 5th....
Update:
found the answer to both my ping and surge. pulled the plugs today to see what the coloring looked like, and the front plug seemed awfully loose to me. when I put em back in I torqued em down tight, and about 99% of my ping and surge is now gone. was sucking air at the plug giving me a lean burn, and ping. and at lower rpm, it surged due to the same, and uneven burn cause by sucking air.

Good to hear you got it sorted out. I'm gonna remember that one!
