I have a 2011 Fatboy Special - and not sure if its the batter or the starter that's going out. Anyway way to tell which it is?
Sometime when starting, it makes a loud noise like the starter is being turned on and off - I tried to make a video, but it started up on the next try without any problems. Its done this several times -

Starter clutch is my vote. Hard to tell without details and/or video, but just sounds like the starter clutch to me, the way it kicks back and releases.
Yeah, check the battery first. It's the easiest and cheapest thing to do. Also, check the cables and the connections.It could be the starter, but go there last as it's expensive and painful to replace..
