After getting my ride back from getting the front wheel balenced I noticed a gap between the tripple tree and the steering head of the frame so you can see the bearing ! can not find a way to adjust it to close the gap , no grind when turning no real bad wobble ? do I need to fully pull it apart and replace the bearings ?they dont seem to of collapsed ? thx for any pointers this tripple tree steering set is way dif to any I have had in the past . Don't know why anyone would put a gap in the triple trees to balance a front wheel. Might be some new procedure?
Seriously, you can see the bearing? Upper or lower? Got a pic?
My guess is that nothing's wrong and you are looking at the adjusting nut.

I don't know if you need to dismantle. However, FYI, regarding the steering stem, from top to bottom you've got:

Cover - just unscrews, normal thread, lefty loosy
Nut
Washer - thin lock tab washer that was upgraded circa '07 to thick thrust washer and higher torque spec
Top Tree
Nut - bearing adjustment
Dust Cover
Upper Bearing
Lower Bearing
Dust Cover
Lower Tree

Why would the bearing be exposed? Doesnt seem right to me. Seems like a great place to load up with dirt and gunk.

Yeah, that's normal. If you do have to adjust it then remove the top cover, loosen the top nut and loosen the fork tube pinch bolts in lower triple tree. If you're careful you can use a screwdriver and hammer to turn the adjusting nut. Don't know if you are aware of this but moco refers to stem bearing adjustment as "fall away". The SM explains the convoluted correct procedure for fall away adjustment. The SM also has good diagrams of the parts breakdown.

Try searching the forum or google for wide glide torque spec upgrade or wide glide clunk. I haven't looked but I'm sure there's something here as it affects all early TC's with wide glide front end.
