I just bought a '13 Heritage Softail, and it runs smooth. My buddy just bought a '06 RoadKing and that motor vibrates like it wants to shake your teeth loose.
Rode mine Sunday. 80 MPH most of the time.
Dead nuts smooth.
It has a slight buzz @ 72-75 mph. 80's unusual for me to cruise at.
75 mostly.
I would like a 6th gear.
Hard-mount and a strut between the top of the transmission and the frame under the tank transmit all engine activity up to the tank which amplifies the noises and firing of the cylinders. Nothing wrong with it, it just isn't as smooth as my rubber mount. Feels like the pistons are hitting the heads, although I know they're not.
I guess I'm not as gritty a rider as I used to be.
Bought it for looks. Rides like a '57 Cushman! My other two Harleys are both rubber-mount and this is going to take some getting used to. I feel every firing of a cylinder throughout my body. Counter-balanced or not, I think some kid tossed some marbles in the engine.
Opposite of my FatBob and Sportster, there is almost no shake at idle, but once you put a load on it, feels like the engine is coming loose, even though the mount bolts are tight. Would I buy another Softy? No. Spoiled. Sure looks good sitting in the driveway, though.
Personally, after reading your reply about, " Would I buy another Softy? No." I think it is wrong to think that all models in the Softail family will run and feel like the one that you are talking about. I think you just have a softy that has some issues of its own. My 05 Springer, has around 105k on her and never been a rough riding bike at any speed/.rpm.
Mine is very smooth except when under heavy throddle with a load. I then get a small buzz in the boards. No bib deal and much smoother than my 04 fxdl. Mirrors are always clear.
