Bought it for looks. Rides like a '57 Cushman! My other two Harleys are both rubber-mount and this is going to take some getting used to. I feel every firing of a cylinder throughout my body. Counter-balanced or not, I think some kid tossed some marbles in the engine.
Opposite of my FatBob and Sportster, there is almost no shake at idle, but once you put a load on it, feels like the engine is coming loose, even though the mount bolts are tight. Would I buy another Softy? No. Spoiled. Sure looks good sitting in the driveway, though.

Something wrong with what you got! I have an 02 & with seat upgrade & progressive suspension - rides very nice! couldn't ask for a better ride.
Is the bike smooth at lower rpm's? If it isn't I would have it checked out. It is rare to hear someone complain about a Softail until you get above 3200 to 3400 rpms. Above that they can get a little buzzy but still nothing major.
Don't know, mine is smooth idling and smooth running. Given what you said, you certainly wouldn't like the old Harley's. Those were shake, rattle and roll..
Edit: Wait a minute. You have the thread running on the engine noise. That may be the source of the vibration you're feeling..
