Get the service manual and follow the maintenance schedule. The primary chain should be checked.

Lots of info on here about primary chains. On my '07 RK it auto adjusted until the chain ate through the shoe at 44,000 miles. That's when I bought the bike. The PO had no idea!

Smile Primary chain adjustment

Its an 07 FXSTC so it has an auto adjuster and the chain has 1/4 slack but there is a wear mark on one of the bottom castings for the screws by the front sprocket. I dont know how it got there I tried to make the chain hit that spot and couldnt , theres probably 1/2 in between the chain and casting. Im thinking the guy who had it first may have had issues. Itonly had 9000 miles on it when I got it it nao has 46000. Although I did notice a slight amount of metal in the oil. I did let 12000 miles go since I changed it last ( I know shame on me). But I havent had any issues I just thought it was time to check things out and adjust the clutch again, Thanks for the input guys.

At 40,000 miles the chain should have been checked\adjusted 5 times or more.

I bought one of the Harley primary chain tensioners for my 06 Heritage Classic and it lasted about 3 oil changes before it can off and the manual adjuster went back on. It had the primary chain so tight that there was zero play in the chain. If I ever go back to an automatic chain adjuster, it will be a Hayden M6

WRONG. 07's on up have auto-adjusters for a reason. No need to check them except for shoe wear. I have 120K+ on my 09 Fatboy and just checked it 15k miles ago and shoe is barely worn.

Great point. I hastily misread the comment on it being an auto adjuster. he should be fine with the possible exception of the shoe as mentioned. There are two camps on the auto adjusters. Most have no issues with durability, others say they work fine until they grenade themselves. Personally, I have a Hayden M6 on my red bike and am pulling it off en-lieu of a stock manual adjuster. I bought the bike with it on and I simply don't trust it's design.
