Need some help. I bought "Leather LID Inserts" and I'm having trouble getting the inserts in all the way. I soaked the crap of the bags with leather conditioner. I can work through that part, but I need info on the top shell for the leather bags. I have a 2013 Heritage. It says I may need to trim the plastic shell. Has anyone gone through this process? If so, I could use all the pointers you have for me and what worked best for you. It seems like a good product. Thank You My Brothers And Sisters.
Contact the manufacturer?
My understanding is you glue the pieces in place on the underside/inside of the bags.
If you soaked the leather in conditioner this may no longer be an option due to the adhesive not adhering to the leather?
Is this what you're referring to?
I bought Leather LIDS Brand. It said to treat the leather to make it more responsive, and let it dry, which I did. That is for the sides of the bags. The top, you scuff up with a light wire brush to give the glue a better bite on the leather. I just figured there's someone that has installed these. The company gives info, but there's nothing like info from someone that has gone through the process.
For the top; I cut two 3/4" pieces of plywood about the same shape as a template for the lid inserts.
I then trimmed the inserts a little to fit, then put down the adhesive (E6000), then pressed the inserts into the lids.
I then put the plywood templates down on the lid inserts and put two 10# metal barbell weights on the plywood.
I let it sit for 24 hours and they haven't moved since I installed them over 4 years ago.
As for the bag inserts; this can be a pain.
What I did was slid one side under the inside bag flag, then with one hand I bent the center upward while with the other hand put the other side under the other flap.
I then push down on the center and it "popped" into place.
Like the lid inserts, I haven't had a problem since they were installed over 4 years ago.
