If you are just changing the light and not rewiring, just jack up the back end and let the tire drop enough for you to reach the bolts. Most aftermarket lights fit directly into the stock light housing. Just unscrew light, unplug, plug in new light, tighten screws.
I replaced my tail light and both rear signals just by jacking up the rear end and let the tire drop down.

16 deluxe and even jacking the bike and dropping the rear tire I couldn't do it. I needed someone with the hands of a 5yo.
Took maybe 45 mins with removing the fender. The brake light now appears that it can been seen from the moon....
