It's front tire time and I've been using the Dunlop D402 Touring MH90-21 tire but was wondering if any one has bought the Avon AV71 Cobra MH90-21 and if so, what did you think? I'm also open to any other suggestions. I live up in Washington State and like most riders, enjoy the curves.
Avons are super sticky, but as a result you’ll get less miles out of them, but they stick! Metzeler 880’s are the best tire I’ve ever run, although I liked the Dunlop American Elites also. I would never purchase a set of the stock dunlops, they are not a great tire, and frankly I find them ugly as well. I also ran a set of Metzeler 888s on a softail, and I HATED them. They are a harder compound tire designed for touring bikes, and I had two front end washouts with them (which I recovered from thankfully). Took them off after 500 miles, in favor of another set of 880’s.
The last AVON I bought was the Venom and I loved it here in NE WA. Unfortunately, pulling a trailer to Sturgis and back wore a flat spot in the rear that was just more wear than I could accept for the money.
I ended up going to the Dunlops again, after the E3's came out and I've gotten a lot better mileage out of them. Not quite as sticky... but last much longer and still grip well in my varied environments.
I had been planning to move to the American Elites but staggered my last replacement and stuck with NOS E3's for now. Got a buddy who rides as late and early into the season as possible and he swears by his AE's.
I recently replaced the 16" front tire/rim with a 21".
I needed a whitewall to match the rear tire.
Avon was my only choice.
Seems like a good tire.
Time will tell.
Based on the 2 that you mentioned, Avon and Dunlop, I had the best luck with Avon Venoms, good grip even while riding in the rain and also good overall mileage out of them.
Thanks everyone with the info. I went ahead and ordered the Dunlop American Elite. It really came down to really not wanting a different brand as the back tire. I know it sounds crazy but I may have a touch of OCD.
