Ok I have a heritage with a SE Ventilator air cleaner on the bike. The original element was the no oil type. They said you could wash it 2 or 3 times then you should replace it, as I did. When I got the replacement from HD. The gave me the K&N that uses oil. I asked for the non oil element and they told me HD is only selling these as the replacement now. OK so I noticed that when I ride at highway speeds I would get a little oil on my oil tank , saddle bag and also on the side of my seat. Not thinking to much about it over the winter I cleaned the filter and oiled the filter as the K&N web site says, also looked at a lot of you tube videos. I also let it sit two months on my work bench before installing it back on the bike. No oil dripped off this filter. But it does blow off the filter when I go on the highway. I don't feel I over oiled this filter. What are you guys doing with K&N element that are fully exposed??????
The filter can possibly be over oiled or it could just be blow by blowing out of your crankcase. Check your oil level and make sure it halfway between cold and hot.
Sounds as though you're not over oiling the filter element but you are having some blow-by from the engine breathers that connect into the filter element. Take about a cup or a little more out of the system by any way you deem possible and see what transpires. I'll wager that you won't have any more issues.
A little K and N oil is all you want to use, easy to think you are oiling correctly but less is better. Also as stated above, i'd run the bike a half quart low, ie if it says 4, 3.5 engine oil, to reduce the oil venting into the filter and dripping down on the engine etc.
I'm wondering if your intake is coughing due to stalling or something similar causing the oil to blow out like that. It's the only time I see it. Should the backing plate been removed I'd also have to wonder if the 'o' rings were reinstalled.
Ok thanks for the responses. I will run the bike and when I get home from a ride. I will check my oil, If it is more than half way up the dip stick I will remove oil until I get to the half way mark. I did not have this problem at the end of last season. But once the season was over for me I did change the oil and I did clean and oil the filter. Thanks again.. swifty
Ok here is an update maybe it will help some one out there. As posted above I oiled my HD SE Ventilator with the K&N filter element with the bottle type oil as per k&N instructions and countless videos. But I got oil all over my oil tank and saddlebags. I took my filter off and there is red oil inside the filter. I cleaned the filter again as per K&N instructions and I use K&N oil but this time the spray can oil.. I just lightly misted it and let it weep in... Today I took my bike on a 100 mile ride. NO oil on my oil tank or saddle bags and when I checked my engine oil if was half way up the stick.
It kind of makes sense, If you think about it. By putting a bead of oil on each ridge of the filter { that's the K&N instructions}I must of put 2 table spoons of oil in the filter!! No wonder at highway speeds it blows all over my bike.. If any one ever wonders about what form to buy when buying K&N oil trust me get the spray can type. Hope this help someone....swifty
