Softail oil dipstick o-ring?
One thing I've noticed is that Harley manuals/catalogs can be a little inconsistent, a fact that has been confirmed by a number of parts people at my local dealers. Harley may have removed the o-ring from the dipstick altogether as a cost saving measure, or maybe the dipsticks now come from a different supplier, but the catalogs themselves may have already been sent to the printers when the changes to the part was made.
BINGO !!
My work requires the use of a lot of "O"-rings. There is nothing magic about em except in how efficiently the little buggers actually work. They don't need to be green or brown or $15 bux apiece. They just need to be the appropriate fit for the channel they're in and the black neoprene ones selling for $2.00 a pound will work just fine in any application on your bike. Just check to see they aren't hardened due to age or abuse. You should be able to fold em over onto themselves and pinch em without any sign of cracking or lingering deformation. If you have some in storage, a very thin film of silicone on em is enough to keep em soft and flexible,,,, forever ??
I believe that I have come to the conclusion that the parts diagrams are incorrect as stated by Ludwig and were never updated from the 01-03 model years where the dipstick was plastic and used the oring as posted by hattitude.
I have put a new dipstick in without the oring and will leave it at that.
Thanks again.
