I have acquired a 98 softail classic with 66000 miles on it. I don't believe any work has been done to the motor so I am wondering what work I should be looking at performing and when.

Change the fluids, ride it like ya stole it, or not. Scooters are scooters, hands on tells everything.

Evos are pretty dependable as long as you keep them close to stock. The only weak spots are the lifters and the inner cam bearing HD has used since '92. I'd inspect/replace the lifters and make sure the cam bearing has been changed to a Torrington B138.

I replace my lifters every 40k. Might be overkill, but I had one fail at 46k and cost me a motor. Current motor in my bike has 120,000 miles on it and runs like a champ.

yep that evo is a great motor....check the lifters an cam bearing (throw a cam in while checking it if it doesn't already have one) an ride the snot out of it. let it warm up before hammering the throttle helps extend gasket life....if it's been taken care of you should get more more out of it before it's time for gaskets an a top end, then it'll go another 100K
