Default 94 FXSTC cam bearing failure.

1994 Harley Davidson Softail FXSTC...

Bought a 94 Softail with 57,000 miles. The bike sounds good and rides ok. I don't know the repair history but I've heard the cam bearing should be replace between 30,000 to 50,000 miles. If not replaced could damage the motor. I've read pro's and con's. Any suggestions on whether they should be changed or not would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

By rights, that bearing should not have ever been installed at the point of original assembly.
Also, a service bulletin was issued to the HD dealers, to "inspect and/or replace" the lifters at 25,000 miles, on the Evo's.
Use a Torrington/Sonnax bearing, and S&S lifters and you'll sleep good.

Funny how a little $15 part could wipe out the entire motor.... Not hard to do at all... One afternoon and done...

Now comes the real fun.....

As long as your in there, might as well do a cam upgrade and wake that little engine that could.....

Better safe than sorry.
If i were you, i'd open her up nd swap that bearing for peace of mind. If that thing goes south, you'll be swapping a lot more than just a bearing!
Even a rookie with a servicemanual can do it in half a days work.
While you're in the camchest, you can freshen things up a little. Bigger cam, lifters, breathervalve etc.
Beware tho.. Once you start wrenching your own bike, it becomes addictive 😉

One more vote for changing cam, cam bearing and lifters.

Just change the bearing and while you are there insert the EV27 cam, you will not regret.

+1 on the cam upgrade and lifters while your in there. Also, maybe some EZ pushrods if it doesn't have them already. Does it have the stock ignition module? If so, if your going to do upgrades, and have the cam cover off, maybe think about upgrading it too to adjust your power curve.
