My 07 has the clutch interlock, but will start in gear if clutch in. I park in neutral, unless on a hill.
THough my 07 has was stalling while riding, and I was unable to get it to start because the connector in fairing came loose, and had to coast over to the side of the ride.
The downside of these safeties is they are a failure point.
For those of you with bikes that can utilize a FP3 (as on my 2014 Police Electraglide), you can shut off that jiffy stand "safety" feature from your app. Obviously, my 2001 Heritage Springer has no such "safety" feature.
This is a great option in the event that you lose or break a jiffy stand spring. Since you will have to find a temporary solution until you get to a place where you can repair, that "safety" feature may leave you stranded.....
I thought my 2014 Slim had died one day earlier this Spring. I had ridden to work, and when I came out and tried to start it.... nothing. The lights would come on, the horn worked, etc. But, the minute I hit the starter button, nothing happened. I fiddled and fiddled and fiddled. I had to call and get a ride home because I had no idea.
But, it turns out that my bike won't start if it's in gear at all. It can be up off the stand, clutch in and still nothing.
This is the newest bike I've owned by 25 years and it really threw me, obviously.
Now that I know about it, it's just an adjustment of my routine. But, it sure confused me some. I can't recall if it's in the owner's manual that I never got (I bought it used) and I don't think the dealer I bought it from said anything about it. But, in the long run, it ain't that big of a deal and I'm over it. Considering all the other crap I've had to remove or battle with on this bike due to 'upgrades in technology', this one doesn't keep me up at night.
Actually. my owners manual states you only need the clutch pulled in if starting in gear, but mine needs the clutch and front brake.
Have you tried it with the clutch and front brake? I would be curious to know if it starts this way. 99.9% of the time I start in neutral, but I want the option to start in gear if for some reason it stalls and I have cars bearing down on me. Every second counts.
I have a blackline (sister to the slim) and I cant start mine in gear. my dads 12 road glide cant start in gear either. I don't have a jiffy stand sensor so that's the prob. I think they make it that way cause of too many goofballs. I hate it.
You must apply the front or rear brake to start the engine and to prevent movement of the motorcycle.
You must squeeze the clutch lever in against the hand grip.
Do not roll the throttle.
Press the engine start switch to start the engine
I wonder if they changed a setting on the ECM/BCM when it was converted to a trike.
Now that makes sense. When they reprogrammed the BAS to trike mode, to keep the engine from shutting down in a sharp curve, it must have made this change also. Very interesting!! I had no idea there would be a difference between the models like this. Thanks for the information. I consider the riddle solved.
