Well, I'm new to this forum and feeling like a bit of a sucker. Really enjoying riding again so I sold a 2006 Sportster 1200 that only had 1500 miles on it. I bought it with 900 miles and put 600 miles on it pretty quick. Realized it was great to be riding again and wanted a bigger bike - something more comfortable for longer rides. Yesterday I bought a 2007 Softail Deluxe with 35k miles from a local dealer. They assured me they had gone through the bike and it was road ready. The bike is gorgeous. Bike appeared to be well taken care of. Went on a 60 mile ride this afternoon with some buddies. Engine light came on and stayed on for maybe two minutes right after starting the bike. Didn't come back on during the ride. We stopped for about an hour and the bike had time to cool down. When I started it back up, Engine light again for several minutes, the. It went off. Look, I've ridden dirt bikes and four wheelers most of my life. New to the Harley world. Do I have a big problem with this bike? Could this be an oil pressure problem? Once compression builds the light goes out? No warranty on this bike. I'm worried I've wasted a lot of money on a bike that's going to need an overhaul? Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks!
First, buy yourself a service manual. If it's throwing on the engine light, it's logging a diagnostic code. You need to run the diagnostic mode and get the codes.
Start with getting yourself a service manual and go from there.
Thanks, TeaRunner. I guess that's where I'll start. Service Dept was closed today so I'll drop by there again tomorrow just to bend their ear a bit. Same thing happened today. Light stayed on for the first 25 seconds or so then went right off. Darn thing rides and runs great so I'm hoping this is a minor issue.
OldEnuf2NoBtr, I'm not sure what that means but I enjoy reading your comments. You guys have a great week and be safe! Thanks again!
When the engine light stays on for a short time (after the usual bulb check) when you first start the bike, it means you have a stored history code. If you have a constant engine light on then that means there's a current code. Do a search, there's plenty of info here about the procedure to pull the codes and what they mean. It could be anything and until you know what code is stored it's just all speculation. Search is your friend, every possible problem has been discussed in great detail and it's just waiting for you to access it.

What light are you talking about? The red key light, the red oil light, or the yellow check engine light?
I'm sorry. I put "Engine Light" as the title of the post and didn't realize I didn't clarify that anywhere in the post. But I am having problems with Yellow Engine Light.

Yellow check light usually indicates an emissions system issue. Take bike back to dealer, most state laws require dealer sold vehicles to be clear of emission issues for 30 days or so. Don't know about your state.
bad tappets, thanks for the reply. I took it back to the dealership. There must be something to what you said. They told me they would pull any codes and fix any problems they found. We shall see but so far so good. Thanks everyone. Definitely buying me a service manual and a much more comfortable driver and rider seat for his bike.
