Looking to get my second Harley. A 100th year anniversary softail has caught my eye. FI. I am wondering if anyone has a method for assessing value. The bike looks great. 17k, The guy wants $7000. Not many upgrades done to it.
I guess I could just use some training..... LOL Guys seem to be in love with their Harleys more than other brands. I have seen some real hunks of junk where they want top dollar.
How many owners, maintenance records? Fair asking price in my opinion....offer him 6 hopefully end up at 6500. I just bought a 05 Softail Deluxe with 10k mikes for 7200 so you have at least one comparison.

One owner. Good records. I am afraid 6 would be insulting but I guess I need to man up LOL
For a fair market value I would start with kbb.com or NADA.com it is a good base to start from, this is what a bank or credit union would base a loan off of, after that it would be what all have said on maintenance records, does it need tires, not just mileage but age,
all sorts of variables. Good Luck with it.
Try to find out the sellers motivation first....ask him what is the best he can do. Also cash in hand always works, however, if it is a nice bike and you like it, buy it! A couple hundred bucks one way or the other does not matter over the course of your ownership.
Service records, how much tread life is on tires or how new the tires are, paint condition, how the bike sounds when running are all things that help me determine the price I pay. Somehow I never think what the owner is selling the bike for is what I want to pay to buy it.

What model softail? Depending on model, Black Book is showing average retail price from around $5400 - $6500.
It's your money so don't be afraid of insulting someone with an offer. Start at $5,500. If he is that emotionally invested in his bike, just let him know your offer stands and tell him to give you a call if he changes his mind. Other than scammers and low ballers on craigslist your offer may be the only legit one he has received. If he really wants to sell I bet you get a call back.
There was an immaculate 2003 Deuce in the for sale section here for $6K Had about 19k miles, saddle bags, 2-1 exhaust, bagger type removeable fairing. Think he sold it but it took months.
I just picked up an '03 Heritage Softail in Pearl White with 4k miles on it for $3200. The bike needs the tank relined and all the internals (bike is EFI) replaced as it sat with fuel in it for so long. By the time I fix that, do a major service and put some new tires on her I figure I will be into the bike for $4200-$4500. The bike came with the receipt ($3800) from the dealer with a list of all the accessories and performance parts put on before it hit the road. I think I got a damn good deal!
$7k is a bit on the high side, but not far off as NADA and KBB value the bike in the mid sixes retail. If you can get the bike for $6k both parties should be happy with the deal...
Personally, I like to try and find out what comparable bikes sell for first albeit that can be difficult due to so many variables. Nevertheless, check "Completed Items" on eBay and Cycletrader asking prices to get a pretty good idea. Regardless, if you like the bike, it looks clean and you can afford it just buy it.
