Only PITA gon be the spring Freak
Rockah just replaced one a d was real smart about it.
Be stuffed washers in between the coils to spread them out so that it hooked in easy peasy
i keep my foot on it when i put it down to keep it in place, but as soon as i put the weight on it, it kicks back. so for now i check it a few times before i walk away. finding my bike on it's side would make me sick
Right, I get it now........
Forgive me if I have this slightly wrong (stock stand removed a couple of years back) but from what I remember with the bike stood upright you'll be able to sweep the stand back and forth as often as you want and at full stroke in the foward position it should be parked waiting to engage between the the two locking tabs. It's only when the bike is leaned over that the stand engages between the tabs.
It sounds to me that yours is trying to flick back from fully forward before it's even being lent over to engage and it could that the spring body is binding on the iron work which would encourage it to flick the stand back to the retract position.
Worth checking the spring has been fitted to the correct fixing points, maybe someone can clarify with a photo?

Shimming with washers is not needed. You tube shows the method using the kickstand as the lever and loosening the attachment nut enough to swing the stand forward and spring will fall off. Rehook it after service pull the stand to the rear and locks into place, little effort, safe and no washers or wrestling with spring.
