If you modify the stock mufflers, you will not be happy with the sound or performance. The best value is American Custom Exhaust mod to include the street friendly baffles, a V&H Fp3 tuner, and a K&N air filter. You can do this complete upgrade yourself under 3 hrs. About $550.00 total. The bike will run well, good mpg, cooler and an adjustable sound.
If you plan on doing cams etc in the future, that's a different conversation.
That's not a bad idea, but my understanding is that an V&H Fp3 voids the warranty?
Sounds like to me my best bet would be American custom exhaust and screaming eagle pro street tuner.
Maybe with that combo I can get the sound I want and cool down the exhaust heat.
One question though, does Am.custom remove the cats when you send in your slip ons? I mean if I still get the sound and they cool off I'm fine with them in, just curious how they do it.
I can say for me as far as cams in the future, probably a no. I never have been one to rap an engine up to its full potential in the rpm range to do any good for high revving cams. I'm more of a 2200 to 3500 rpm kind of rider. I know they make low rpm cams, but I'm fine with the power I have now. Everybody says that in the beginning. Lol
Since your getting stockers for free, nothing wrong with trying it out. I gutted my stock slipons on my old Dyna and threw in some TTI's. made a big difference with sound and heat. Sometime later I put a K&N filter and Xieds and she really ran great. This where I'm at with my new Heritage now.
I may get some Rush slipons down the road, and an FP3, but for now I'm good.
Exactly sparky357. That's why I could not understand why my dealer has no trouble exchanging the mufflers but said he cannot do the headers. I have a question for you. The stock headers run one pipe above my rear passenger peg and one pipe below it. The Vance & Hines headers put both pipes below the rear passenger peg. I should simply be able to change the header pipe myself and use the same mufflers to get the relocation of my pipes, correct? Should not need to retune or anything?
With all that's been said what is the best way to get more sound out of the 2017 exhaust? Did the V&H big shots work for you and the dealer said your ok to do that without voiding warranty?
I'm looking at a 2017 myself but I need better sound for my bike and the issue of the warranty is my concern!!
thanks

no, the dealer I bought my bike from said if I change the headers the warranty is void as they will tag the VIN Per Harley Davidson's rule I guess. So I am taking the bike with the stock exhaust, I have another dealer that said they will do it in it will not void the warranty and they will not tag the VIN.
I am going with the V&H big shots long and HD AC and tuner. I have not actually heard the pipe yet, but if you go to YouTube and hook into a decent speaker system you can get a very good idea, don't listen to it on your phone. I just Bluetooth through my vehicle stereo and you can hear the sound pretty decent.

If the diameters are the same and the mufflers end up in the same spot to meet the bracket,it might work.

No need to change header. The stock header works fine, assuming the cats are still in the mufflers on the 2017
Yes, the cats are in the mufflers on a 2017 FLSTC.
The stock header with the hidden balance tube behind the mufflers is a good performer. Air filter, Harley tuner and American Custom Exhaust mufflers with street friendly quick change baffle would be a good and changeable set up. Low cost.
