Default Steering head torque setting?

Hello guys,
My 05 Deluxe must not have been assembled properly and I had to have the steering head bolt re-torqued down at about 700 miles due to a lot of head shake. The dealer did it but wanted to charge me for it as it was an adjustment. I told them to f*ck off they assembled it and they did not get it to seat properly so they needed to fix it. Anyway, here we are about a year later and now the bike has 4100 miles on it and the head shake has returned. I would guess that the bearings are now fully seated in but I'm sure this time the dealer would want to charge me to do this simple adjustment. I might as well do it myself but don't know the proper setting. Does anyone know the correct (by the book) setting? I was reading another thread on the subject by doing a search and saw everywhere from 70-120 ft pounds but nobody appeared to really have the answer.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Mark

Default RE: Steering head torque setting?

Unfortunately it isn't as easy as torquing to a specific number. A lot of it has to do with the feel of the way the forks flop. If you have the factory manual, it has a pretty good description of the procedure. As a rule of thumb, once you get it where it belongs, go approx. 5/8 of a turn TIGHTER. That will allow it to loosen up a little and not shake. As you know, too loose and it'll wobble on you. Too tight and it will be a vague, slow feeling in the bars. It's hard to describe the "feel" of how the forks turn side to side when you have it right.

Got it. Thanks Joey. I just finished and 80 pd/ft was too tight. 70 seems about right in my case.
