Tire man here. Like others have said, check tread and check the sidewall for dry rot. There is a certain level of sidewall splitting (dry rot) that is considered safe and has no effect on the structural integrity of the tire. Look for punctures in the tire, even ones that haven't gone all the way through the tread. A 9 year old radial tire with with shallow punctures could still cause internal belt rusting, resulting in a separation at highway speeds. Lastly, if the tires make you nervous, just change them. First thing I do on all uses vehicles I buy is change all fluids and put new tires on.
