Default Heritage rear fender rail install

Looking at putting the HD rear fender rail on my Heritage. Instructions call for drilling holes in fender. I’ve seen posts where people have installed without drilling. Anyone here done it that way? How is it done?

I read your post and don't recall drilling my fender so I decided to look at my installation and the instructions.

The instructions certainly state to drill the fender but I can't see the new hole in the diagram that's in the instructions.
There's only the three connection points and all of those holes are existing.

I'm not sure what the purpose of the 2 new holes are.

Anyway Here's the pictures of my installed rail.
As you can see there's no new holes.

If I recall correctly the installation was straight forward and easy.

I didn't drill a new hole. Loosened the fender support cover (D in Bluraven's pic.) enough to slide the nut and washer into/behind it. I had read on here someone doing it that way. Little tight but it worked out fine.

I’m thinking of buying the rear rail for my 2011 Heritage but also didn’t want to drill holes. Do you need to buy different bolts and nuts to attach? Not sure how it all works. I would appreciate any advice

I used the bolts that came with the rail. Just cut them off enough to not hit fender when tightened. Otherwise, yes you would need shorter bolts as the ones sent are long enough to go through fender.

All of the treads above are the way to go. As for as the tab at the bottom, i did not drill a hole for bolt #3. I used 3M double sided tape and taped that tab to the underside of the fender. Many treads on that. Did the same for the front rail tab. Did thay 4 years ago and still no worries.

On my 2012 Heritage, all three holes did not exist. There was a hole in the fender support rail but no corresponding hole in the fender itself. The hole by the fender tip lamp was there.

Like the others, I loosened the fender support rail and slid a washer and nut behind it and used a short bolt to secure the rail without drilling the fender.

This was very helpful, I'm going to be installing F/R rails on my 05. I had a lil fear of drilling as well. Thanks guys.

off hand does any one know the smaller size of the bolt used, so that we do not have to drill?
thanks

If you're thinking about doing it the way I mentioned, I don't remember how much I cut off the bolt. If you measure from the outside of the fender support to your fender you'll know how much room you have to work with. Allow enough for the thickness of the rail you are installing, enough for a full thread on the nut you'll use and you're good to go.
