I try to decipher this for quite some time already but I am lost.
I have 2014 Slim 103" I did conversion for forward controls Part Number 33909-08A that is described as:
"kit converts the standard FL Softail® footboard controls to Original Equipment FX Softail® style forward controls." And "Fits '07-'17 FLSTC, FLSTF (except FLS, FLSS, FLSTFB and FLSTFBS), FLSTN, FLSTSB, and FLSTSC models"
I try to buy engine guard now but I noticed mounting hole on forward controls bracket is shifted about 1/2" to the back of the bike.
Now I am not sure for which model to search while looking for engine guard.
FL motors are mounted in rubber bushings, no internal balance shafts. Boy them engines shake! FX engines are hard mounted to the frame, no rubber bushings and have an internal balance shaft. A lot smoother in my book. Owned a 2008 Electra Glide standard and I feel my new 2016 Breakout is a lot smoother.

This is only partially true... there are FL touring models (rubber mounted) and FL softail models (balanced motor)... ALL softails are rigid mounted with a balanced motor.
I remember looking into this for you Burbur... and the part number for the engine guard was the same between the FL and FX models... not sure where the problem seems to be for you

Part numbers for engine guard for FX and FL are not the same. Mounting hole on forward controls is more to the back so it is not the same set up and I believe converting from floorboards to forward controls results in switch from FL to FX. Pix from catalog below. I like curved engine guard and might consider mustache but these models dont list FX as fit.
yes mounting holes for floorboards and forward controls brackets are same but mounting holes for engine guard are different.
