More info, Miles? Was it shifting fine before? Did the problem just start? ETC.

harleys usually have that classic "clunk" when going from neutral to 1st. i sometimes scare people at stoplights... i can see them flinch

Did you just change the oil?

Or did it sit all winter and get condensation in the tranny oil through the breather?

I'd change the oil and see what happens. There's loads of tranny oil options. I've always done syn mobile1 in all three holes.

shifts quiet and like butter.

I put a Hayden Primary Tensioner in last year, and it made a big difference in the classic "clunk" going into 1st gear and finding neutral.

When cold, going into 1st will bang. Check your clutch adj.
Just starting out, 1st shift of the day, pull the clutch in for
a few seconds
make sure the lvr is back to the grip. My trans hardly ever
makes a sound

Usually the first or initial shift into first after starting up. This is my first Harley and it still startles me a little.

Lots of loud/hard shifting problems are caused by the clutch/primary drive, not the trans.

I solved mine by using 4 ounces of Lubeguard highly friction modified ATF supplement along with Mobil 1 syn ATF in the primary. It's like a different bike now
